My Approach

I believe how we think is how we respond to the world around us. My theoretical approach to therapy is best categorized as Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) which is a widely recognized and effective therapeutic approach that focuses on the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. As a practitioner, I utilize various techniques derived from CBT to help clients understand and modify unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors.

Here is a quick overview of how I apply CBT techniques in sessions:

  1. Collaborate with my client as partners in the therapeutic process and establish a supportive and non-judgmental environment you can feel comfortable expressing your thoughts and emotions.

  2. Provide handouts or materials to help you understand the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and help you understand how your thinking patterns impact their emotional well-being and actions.

  3. Assist with identifying automatic by helping you become aware of these thoughts, and examine their accuracy, validity, and impact on emotions and behaviors.

  4. We will start to explore cognitive restructuring which will aim to challenge and reframe negative or distorted automatic thoughts. Through questioning techniques and alternative perspectives.

  5. Then we start a plan toward identifying behaviors that contribute to their distress or reinforce negative thoughts. I will encourage and support you as you engage in alternative behaviors that align with your goals and values, and help you break the cycle of negative thinking and improve their mood and functioning.

  6. Encourage you to confront and gradually overcome anxiety or fear related to specific situations or stimuli.

  7. Actively build skills by presenting clients with practical skills and coping strategies that they can apply in their daily lives. These may include relaxation techniques, problem-solving skills, assertiveness training, and stress management strategies just to name a few. I will empower you to effectively navigate challenges and cope with stressors.

  8. Self Work is the best work so there will be some homework assignments. These will be tailored to your interests and needs.  Examples: Monitoring and challenging negative thoughts, Practicing new behaviors, Applying newly learned skills

  9. I keep track of your therapeutic goals to assess your progress and evaluate the effectiveness of the techniques.

Overall, your therapeutic approach involves a structured and goal-oriented application of cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques. By combining empathy, collaboration, and evidence-based strategies, I will assist clients in developing healthier thinking patterns, managing emotions, and achieving positive behavioral change.
